Our partnership with the Van Gogh Museum in 2022 came as part of the museum’s exhibition ‘Color as Language’ highlighting the retrospective work by Lebanese artist Etel Adnan (1925 – 2022). Adnan’s artworks were shown alongside those of Vincent van Gogh who was a significant source of inspiration. Adnan saw color as a direct expression of nature and she considered Van Gogh to be the first artist to dare to apply this in his art.
Adnan’s work is inextricable linked with her mixed cultural background and the fact that she has lived in so many different places around the world: language and culture are essential concepts in her work.
The Foundation supported Lebanese filmmaker Deena Charara in the showing of a documentary of the late artist Etel Adnan during her last visit to her beloved home city of Beirut.
